Who are you?
Studio No.3 is basically a Romanian letterpress printing studio, but not only that; not only that we press letters on a paper, but we create memorable paper objects: business cards, stationary, wedding materials (invitations, place cards, menus..), birthday/ Christmas/ anniversary cards, door hangers, personalized funky boxes. The paper, the colors, the broaden letterpress printing & production experience, the materials we produce speak for us. Ok, we also speak about them, because we really love our work.
Where did you get the idea to found a letterpress studio in Romania?
We like travelling around the world and we have always loved paper especially hotel stationary. 3 years ago, we discovered in an old beautiful city some awesome products, letterpress printed, but here in Romania you could not find any of these. So we started to study – how it’s done, how they did it. From that point to Studio No.3, there is a long way with ups and downs, but it all counts as experience and we can praise ourselves that we do have this experience and we can offer the best solution for each and every project you might have. Recently we added a new service to our portfolio: hot foil stamping and we are quite satisfied with the results of our work. Actually, we are really keen on getting the best out of our work: we are professionals and we know what we do and how we should do it.
Who are your customers?
It is hard to generalize. We do a lot of printing for private people who want something particular for their special events such as weddings or birthdays. Graphic designers are asking for exclusive business cards or office stationary. And we also work for companies for whom we create invitations, Christmas cards, labels etc. We work for Romanian, European and US customers and we manage their projects in the most professional manner.
What characteristics does the perfect letterpress paper have?
It needs to have volume, be soft and the fibres must not break under pressure! That is why they say cotton paper is very well suitable for letterpress, but we also use other kind of paper. However, from my experience, you don’t know what is possible until you have tried it out!
In the US and other European countries letterpress is experiencing a renaissance. Do you also observe this development in Romania?
Not as much as in the US, but I think that we are on the good track. People are searching on the internet and see wedding invitations and business cards printed letterpress, then they start asking for them. Still, I think letterpress will stay a niche because it is rather complex and costly and objects can not be produced in hundreds of thousands. However we do work for international customers and these customers know exactly what they want and challenge us every day with their projects.
You said you work for international customers. How does Studio No.3 stay competitive? Why do you think they choose you?
I don’t know that it’s as much about staying competitive as it is about reputation and capability in our case. We have the skills and know how to produce awesome letterpress works, we can suggest our customers which printing method suits best for their project, we are reliable and quick and we think that counts. There aren’t many letterpress shops out there that can handle the same set of specifications that we can handle. We generally get projects that are highly custom, more difficult press projects: hot foil stamping, multiple colors printing, multiple die cuts, maybe two specialty papers glued together, edge coloring … stuff where it’s not just a straightforward choice out of a picture gallery.
